Description

This reassembled ceramic vessel was found at a Late Woodland site in Halifax County in the southern Piedmont. It was decorated by impressing fabric onto the surface of the wet clay and using a fingernail to make notches along the lip. Ceramic impressions allow archaeologists to study Virginia Indian textiles that have decayed after centuries in the acidic soil.
