Description

These ceramic sherds were found at a Late Woodland site in Prince George County on the southern Coastal Plain. They are examples of Abbott Farm Ware zoned pottery, a rare type that is elaborately decorated with fine, incised motifs forming geometric bands around the vessel. This particular vessel was decorated by pressing a dowel (or stick) wrapped with a cord into the wet clay. These ceramics were likely used in large ceremonial feasts between 1000 and 1400 C.E.
