Description

These ceramic sherds are intricately decorated with incised geometric designs, forming bands around the vessel. This type of pottery is called Abbott Farm ware. This ware is diagnostic of the Late Woodland period and is relatively rare in Virginia. Archaeologists suspect these vessels may have been involved in ceremonial feasts or gatherings, and perhaps were ritually exchanged between neighboring groups. These Abbott Farm ware sherds were found at a site in King and Queen County on the Coastal Plain. (Photo enhanced)
