Description

These shell disc beads come from an Early Historic period site in Roanoke County in the Blue Ridge region of west-central Virginia. Shell beads were traded extensively throughout Virginia since the Late Archaic period. When Europeans arrived in Virginia, Indians used trade goods such as shell and glass beads to navigate relationships with colonists during the early seventeenth century. (Photo enhanced)
