Description

These tubular copper beads were found at an Early Historic period site in Montgomery County, southwestern Virginia. Native copper was an important prestige material for centuries before colonists arrived in Virginia. When Europeans arrived, they produced sheet copper ornaments to be traded with Virginia Indians. Exchange of material goods was one way that people navigated relationships with colonists in the early seventeenth century. (Photo enhanced)
