Description

These button backs and bell were found at an Early Historic period village site in Montgomery County, southwestern Virginia. Virginia Indians had long valued items made from native copper. When Europeans arrived, they traded metal goods with Virginia Indians. Exchange of material goods was one way that people navigated relationships with colonists in the early seventeenth century.
