Description
These miscellaneous artifacts were found at an Early Historic period site in Caroline County, southwestern Virginia. They include ceramic sherds and pipe fragments produced by Virginia Indians, and iron trade goods obtained from colonists. Exchange of material goods was one way that people navigated relationships with colonists in the early seventeenth century. Virginia Indians manufactured and used tools made from traditional materials alongside those that they obtained from Europeans. (Photo enhanced)
