Title

Native Americans Paying Tribute to the Governor of Virginia

Subject

Virginia Indians, Pamunkey

Description

Pamunkey tribal members pose with Governor Harry F. Byrd Sr. and their annual tribute of game, probably in Richmond, sometime between 1926 and 1930. The photographer is unknown. The annual tribute honored the terms of the treaty ending the Third Anglo-Powhatan War (1644–1646). In exchange for loyalty to the Crown, the Pamunkeys received military protection from the English. The annual ceremony continues to be observed by the Pamunkey and Mattaponi tribes.

From left to right are an unidentified man, Theodora Dennis Cook, George Major Cook, Byrd, Pocahontas Cook, Willie Bradby, James Bradby, and Duckie Page.
